Are you a collaboration kind of guy/gal? Or do you prefer to go it alone?
In small business, and especially I reckon when we’re starting out, we think we have to do it all ourselves. We think that we have to have all the answers already. We think, that by going elsewhere and shock horror, asking for help or seeking out a collaboration opportunity that we are somehow admitting that we can’t do it?
Ever felt like that?
My imposter syndrome would run wild. But I’m MEANT to be doing this myself. I saw asking for help as a weakness. So the last thing I would imagine doing is going to ask someone to collaborate with me on a project.
Collaboration and help are not the same thing
And even writing it, it now feels very stupid to me. I had put collaboration and needing help into the same bucket whereas collaboration as its core is working WITH someone to produce something – isn’t that interesting that I had made it into a negative? ….and isn’t language and how we use it such a powerful thing – definitely more on that in another post.
Fast forward a few years and I have a business partner in my other business (therefore collaboration is vital at the very core), I regularly collaborate with other marketing professionals on client projects and this weekend, in the ultimate collaboration scenario I’m ‘project managing’ a retreat being run by two (incredible) women who liked how each other worked, liked what the other was saying and decided it would be fabulous to work together.
Collaboration can bring the best of everyone together, allow everyone to showcase their strengths and result in a catalyst effect of greater impact.
I am SO excited about the weekend that is about to happen. Everyone working together towards a common goal which is going to result in a fabulous weekend of learning and discovery.
